10 Ways to Workout from the Comfort of Your Home

The memberships are too expensive, all the people there look like they really don’t need to be going to the gym anymore, and none of your friends will go with you. Instead of giving up before you even start, consider working out from your own home. You don’t need a ton of expensive equipment or a home gym to get a solid workout. Honestly, you don’t even need to invest in weights! There are many simple exercises that you can master on your own.

Thanks to the internet, you can pretty much do anything on your own these days, whether it is cooking, carpentry, or crafting—you will find a how-to guide. Exercise is no different. Once you have decided to try out exercising from home, you will have acquired a new best friend: YouTube. If you are interested in trying out a new form of exercise but you don’t want to buy DVDs, just do a quick search on YouTube and you will most likely find an instructional video.

Here is a list of exercises that can be done with little to no equipment. They just require a little bit of instruction. Some of these suggestions are intensive programs to follow and some are as simple as games. No matter what, you can find something that is perfect for you—and you even have the convenience of doing it from your own home! Before you spend a lot of money on a gym membership that you don’t even use, try out these at-home exercises.

  1. Yoga. Yoga is a great form of exercise for many reasons. If you find yourself to be stressed out all the time, this might be a good option for you. Yoga is great stress relief because you focus a lot on breathing and balance. It also helps with your flexibility because there is a lot of stretching involved. This is a great exercise to practice at home because once you learn the positions (which you can find on the internet) you can practice them in any order on your own. Many people like to start their day with a little bit of yoga, just to wake their body up. Give this a shot!
  2. Kick Boxing. Although kick boxing would require some equipment, it might be worth the investment for you. Kick boxing is great for people that need to blow off some steam every now and then. It is a very active form of exercise that engages your entire body. You will build muscle and tone what you already have while learning some pretty useful self-defense skills.   3. Aerobics. Aerobic exercises are very important for anyone trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Many people think that aerobics are really boring, but they don’t have to be! Aerobics can come in many forms, so make sure you do your research to find out what you will enjoy the most! One form of aerobics is jazzercise—that will be sure to keep you engaged and working hard! P90X is an intensive regime that uses cross training to help ensure a solid work out and it is great for those wanting to work out from home because that is what it is designed for. P90X also encourages dietary changes to help your exercise be most effective for your body. This is a plan that will take some investment and commitment, but if you can make it through it, you will be glad you did!
  5. Insanity. The name of this plan might be intimidating, but it is definitely worth it! This is a plan that is similar to P90X because of the intensity, but there are different goals with each plan. For those trying to lose weight, Insanity might be the better option because there is s heavier focus on cardio. This plan is also designed to be used in the home, so it is a great alternative to a gym membership.
  6. Pilates. Sometimes it is tricky to tell the difference between yoga and pilates, but there are actually some significant differences. Pilates is mostly focused on core strength. This is a great exercise for someone who has a weak back or struggles with back pain.   7. Dancing. This option might sound silly, but there are actually a lot of benefits of dancing. This is when exercise can be fun. There are so many options with dancing—you just have to pick the style that suits you. This is also a great opportunity to learn something new, especially if you have a dance partner. You could learn hip hop, ballet, or even ballroom. Dancing is a great form of cardio exercise that could even benefit you socially!   9. Wii Exercises. So you might have a Wii already, but instead of playing games, start working out! There are some great workout programs that are offered by Wii, and the best part is you feel like you are just playing a game!   10. Jillian Michaels Work Out Plans. This is just one example of something that you could find online. Jillian Michaels is famous for her role in the TV show The Biggest Loser, but she also has killer workouts. This is one of the coolest things about having the internet as a resource for workout routines—you can have famous people teaching you without ever leaving your house. Find the right trainer for you and then run with it!
